Elite Series - SIAC Homebush - 9th January 1999

Race Reviews by Rachelle Quiggin - Athletics NSW

ANDREW MURPHY
4th - Mens 60m - 7.17 sec
Murphy was happy with his race, but thinks 60 metres is just too short, "It
was okay, but it's over so quickly." Between races Murphy was planning some
jumps training. He is happy with the way he has been jumping lately, "I'm
getting back to where I was in '97." where he finished 5th at the World
Indoors and was Optus Grand Prix Male Athlete of the Year. Murphy has been
doing more speed work "to get sharp for Adelaide." He is glad to get the
opportuunity to race against the likes of Shirvington and Vassella, and is
using today to get more competition under his belt before the Optus Grand
Prix series and Nationals, "I'm using this as competition; just to get into
the competing mood."

3rd - Mens 100m - 11.06 sec

STEPHANIE PRICE
1st - Womens 400m Hurdles - 59.07 sec
Price was very happy with her run, her first in one and a half months.
Price had a suspected stress fracture in her right foot which forced her to
take a complete break from the track for the month and a half. " A bone in
my foot was aggrivated and was very sore when I ran." Price was doing
anything possible to minimise the effects of any time off the track, "I did
anything I could, pool sessions, bike sessions, weights, just no impact
training." She has also had to fix the biomechanics of her foot and now
wears orthotics to prevent her rolling in. Price was very pleased with the
way the race went for her. "I'm very happy. It's my first race in a month
and a half. To come back and go 59 (seconds), I'm very happy. I felt good
near the end which made me think I could have run faster." Price was
untroubled by the strong wind at Homebush, which usually plays havoc with
hurdllers stride and rhythm. "The wind had been blowing all day. I went
better than I expected with the wind. Almost all my steps were right - you
lose count at the end of the race! My race went to plan, I didn't mess up
any hurdles." [Price rans 15s to hurdle six, the two 16s and then 17s home]
Price has her sights set on the Grand Prix series and defending her title
at nationals. "I want to pick up where I left off a month and a half ago,
go for a PB and defend my national title ."
Price ran a great race, showing her experience and talent to win by almost
three seconds over 16 year old Jana Pittman (1.01.81)

MENS 800M
The early lead was taken by pacemaker Craig O'Brien, with Martin Byron
(Sydney Uni) and Todd MacDonald (Asics Wests) close behind. They past the
line for the first time in 54.59 seconds and the same order before Byron
pushed past O'Brien as he pulled onto the inside of the track after 500m.
MacDonald kept close behind him, issuing a challenge at the 600m mark and
maintainig a tussle around the bend. Byron entered the straight just in the
lead and held it to the line in 1.52.50, with MacDonald just seven
hundreths of a second behind (1.52.57). Simon Rintel (3rd) and Johl Storey
(4th) issued a final challenge to the leaders close to the finishing line.

Todd MacDonald
"I'm not really happy with the time. I felt my hamstring grab 120 (metres)
out, but I was still feeling pretty fresh."
"The back straight I looked up at the clock, and was not happy with what I
saw!"
"I think the third 200m killed us. We slowed right up into the wind, and
had to go for it with the wind behind us in the back straight, but the
tempo..."
"It was a pretty slow time, considering."
MacDonald has had problems with his hamsting since 1995, caused by his
natural biomechanics, and has had to get used to training around it. "I'm
not able to do any speed work, I'm running off 1500m training, and I'm not
a 1500m runner."
Todd began his running career as a 400m hurdler, but his change to 800m
appears to have been a successful one. "I started with the 400m hurdles,
then moved to 400m and dabbled in the 800m, now 800's are as fast as I go."
He is hoping to run in the Grand Prix series and is then looking to
nationals. "No one is running really well in Australia at the moment. If I
run 1.50 (min), which I was hoping for today, I should get in, but there's
no reason why we can't do it at Interclub."

WOMENS 400M
Having recently relocated to Sydney, Renee Poetscha stamped her authority
on the race from the gun, entering the final straight with almost ten
metres on the rest of the field. She looked set to finish strongly but
faltered and stumbled across the finish line, with Nicole Buchanon taking
line honours. Poetscha ran the race with her left ankle strapped and barely
limped off the track to receive treatment for an archilles injury.
