n Clubs are asked to please provide their views on whether we should retain the Under -12 State Championship.

n As reported recently in the media, the Australian Taxation Office has issued a draft taxation ruling that will assist individuals who receive income from the sport to determine whether various benefits or receipts are assessable income. The ruling applies to both athletes and officials.

Copies of the draft ruling are available from the Tax Office (ph 02 6216 1901) or on the ATO’s internet site at www.ato.gov.au/media

n The inaugural NSW Masters Games will be held on July 24-August 1 at Coffs Harbour. Contact for the Games is PO Box 2152 Coffs Harbour 2450 or phone 02 6658 5793.

n The IAAF Council have nominated 1998 as the Year of Women in Athletics. Among the goals are to celebrate the achievements of women in sport in the last century and to remove all the remaining obstacles that still stand in the way of women’s participation in sport.

A Women’s Commission was established within the IAAF in 1948 to improve the presence and influence of women in athletics. Now called the Women’s Committee, this body now has 13 members from different countries. A special Sub-Commision for Women consisting of Ilse Bechtold, President of the IAAF Women’s Committee, and the IAAF Council members Nawal El Moutawakel and Abby Hoffman has been formed within the IAAF Development Commission to organise activities for the Year of Athletics.

n Following their superb performances at the World Juniors Pre-Departure Meet in Sydney on June 13, Rhys Jones and Aaron Hartney were added to the Australian Junior team for the World Juniors.

n All clubs have now received a copy of Athletics Australia’s new age group specifications for hurdles and throwing events. AA have also provide a ‘draft only’ list of Australian Championship qualifying standards and timetables for the Australian All Schools and Australia Under Age Championships. Anyone interested in commenting on the standards and timetables should contact Athletics NSW for a copy.

n Parking for athletes and officials at the SIAC continues to remain an major issue for Athletics NSW, SIAC and other hirers of the venues. Be assured that all attempts are being made to satisfactorily solve the issue.

n Athletics NSW has reinstated second claim membership following reprsentations from a number of clubs and discussions held at the Club Conference.

n NSW team for the Australian Marathon in July is: Carmel Kahlefeldt, Sylvia Rose, John Bowers, John Young, Philip McGilvray and Daniel Abotomey.

Around The Tracks

n Most Friday & Sunday evenings, Olympic 400m runner, Paul Greene can be seen singing solo or with his band ’Bullshark’ at One World Sport at Darling Harbour. Hopefully we will also see Paul back on the track soon.

n On this day: July 12th Nick Winter won the 1924 Olympic Triple Jump title; July 14th At the Bislett Games in Oslo in 1965 Ron Clark chalked up his 12th World record knocking 34 seconds off his existing mark.

n Coaches in the US have asked their National Federation to recommend to the IAAF that the women’s 100 hurdles be raised from 0.84m to 0.91m.

n Komen has stated that he will make serious attempts on the 1500m & mile world records and with personal bests of 3:29.46 and 3:46.38 respectively who could doubt his ability to succeed.

n Two movies to watch out for are: the story of US distance runner Steve Prefontaine (produced by Tom Cruise) and Nicholas Cage will star in a movie about the life and career of Lou Zamperini. Zamperini ran in the 5000m at the Berlin Olympics. During WW II, Zamperini’s plane crashed in the Pacific and he drifted for 47 days in a life raft. He was held in POW camps in Japan until the end of the war.

n Queensland has overtaken NSW as the state with the most registered coaches. 1998 and 1997 figures are: QLD 448/360, NSW 428/473, Vic 281/282, SA 103/97, WA 101/118, Tas 42/44, ACT 63/61.

n IAAF PRESS RELEASE - SEVILLE PREPARES FOR 7TH IAAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ATHLETICS

22 June 1998

Seville - Spain - The IAAF Council today held a special session in Seville, site of next year's 7th IAAF World Championships in Athletics. The main scope of the meeting, chaired by IAAF President Dr Primo Nebiolo, was to ascertain the state of progress of preparations for this, the major sports event of 1999, which will bring more than 3000 athletes and an equivalent number of media from around the world to the capital of Andalusia.

The President of the Organising Committee and President of the Province of Seville, Alfredo Sanchez Monteseirin, assured the IAAF Council of his city's pride in hosting the World Championships and that the event would be a cornerstone of future development of Seville, and not only in the field of sports.

The President of the Spanish Athletic Federation, José Maria Odriozola then presented to the IAAF Council the various solutions chosen to answer the problems arising from the accommodation of athletes, journalists and other visitors to the Championships and the proposed timetable. This latter has been arranged to satisfy the diverse needs of the athletes, first and

foremost, the spectators in the stadium and television audiences around the world.

During the nine days of the Championships (from 21 to 29 August 1999), there will be only four morning sesssions, comprising eliminatory heats, with the exception of the 26 August when the 50km walking race will start at 7.45 in the morning, with the finish expected around 11.25 am. On the last day, there will be another event in the morning: the women's marathon (start 9.05, estimated finish around 11.25). the afternoon sessions are scheduled to start no earlier than 1800 hrs. On the first day of competition there will be three finals: the 20km walk for women, replacing the 10km event), the women's pole vault (12 athletes

invited to compete) and the men's shot put. The finals of the 100m - women and men - are scheduled for Sunday 22 August, at 9pm and 9.15pm respectively.

The men's marathon, which is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of spectators, will take place on the evening of 28 August, starting at 6.45pm. The final of the men's pole vault - with Sergey Bubka looking to take home his seventh consecutive title - will be held on the evening of 26 August, starting at 7.15pm.

The organisers have also defined the details of the opening ceremony which, according to President Odriozola, will be particularly innovative and original. The procession of the teams will not be eliminated, but will be incorporated into the show, which is being prepared by the same troupe who prepared the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympics. They will be

accompanied by a number of artists from Seville who participated in the "son and lumiere" produced for the Expo Seville '92.

During the Council meeting, President Nebiolo awarded the IAAF Silver Order of Merit for the exceptional careers in sports and athletics administration to three Council members: Hassan Agabani, Artur Takac and Igor Ter-Ovanesian.

Tomorrow, the IAAF Council will visit the Olympic Stadium, construction of which is scheduled for completion in March 1999. IAAF President, Dr Primo Nebiolo will hold a press conference in the Nebrija room of the Spanish Pavilion at 12.30pm.

Obituary - Tony New

ANTHONY STEPHEN NEW (20/7/38 – 20/6/98)

Saucony Sutherland Athletic Club is mourning the sudden death on 20 June 1998 of its long standing President Anthony (Tony) New.

Tony took early retirement as a Senior Bank Manager and directed his energies in no small way to Amateur sporting administration including Rugby Union, Bowls, Sailing and Athletics.

After resuming his association with athletics in 1985, he became a senior competitor (walks) and a Field Official. At school he had been a Champion athlete at De La Salle College, Coogee followed by some 250 grade games of rugby union with Randwick and St George clubs. In 1968 he was first grade coach at St George and was a selector for the club for ten years. During this time he was President and made a Life member of St George Junior Rugby Union. In the 1980s he became a Vice President and Life Member of the NSW Junior Rugby Union, a Committee member of Kyle Bay Bowling Club and Commodore of the Kogarah Bay Sailing Club.

A long time delegate from Sutherland Club to Athletics NSW, he also assisted ANSW in trying to extend its sponsorship base. While he had a strong personality, he directed his energies to what he believed was the best direction for the development of the sport.

He will be remembered for the huge contribution that he made to the administration of a number of sports.

Arnold Hunt AM

Dr Arnold Hunt was a recipient of the award Member in the General Division (AM) in the 1998 Queen’s Birthday Honours for his contribution to athletics and sport in general.

A member of Hornsby Little Athletic Centre since its inception in 1970, he was made a life member in 1994. In the same year he was also made a Life Member of the Little Athletics Association NSW. Since 1973 he has held many positions with Cumberland Women’s Amateur Athletic Club and subsequently the Cumberland Ryde Hornsby Athletic Club. He has been timekeeper/chief timekeeper with Little Athletics Association NSW, Athletics NSW, NSW Sports for the Disabled and organisations such as GPS, CAS and Independent Girls Secondary Schools associations.

Since 1985 he has been Chairman of Little Athletics NSW and from 1990 to 1993 a member of the Board of Directors Athletics NSW (Officials). He was a member and major contributor of the Implementation Group established by Athletics Australia and Australian Little Athletics to develop strategies for the development of the transition age-group between Little Athletics and Senior Athletics.

Now retired, he was formerly staff member of the University Sydney 1959-90, variously Assoc. Professor of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science and Medicine, and Associate Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Science. He was the foundation secretary of the Australian Society for Medical Research.

His contributions to athletics and sport in general are outstanding and the medal is thoroughly deserved.
