  • Running for Dummies by  Florence Griffith Joyner, John Hanc and Jackie Joyner-Kersee

    Running for Dummies

    Review
As good a primer as Running is, it takes a few moments to turn the sense of loss attending author Flo-Jo's premature death into one of celebration of  her accomplishments. Running's triumphant cover and 16-page full-color photographic homage to one of track and field's most spectacular presences serve as bridges over this emotional gap, but, ultimately, it's Flo-Jo's own contagious passion and eagerness to share what she knows that kick this comprehensive, energetic, and entertaining guide into a truly fitting tribute.
Like a good coach, Flo-Jo works to inspire and never condescends; she helps you get started, spurs you on, and then sends you huffing and puffing on your way. She explains running's physiological and emotional benefits in detail (and those of walking, too, if you're so disposed); introduces you to shoes and equipment; and stresses the importance of safety and road etiquette, good nutrition, stretching, warming up and cooling down, and, most of all, making sure that regardless of your health or age to check first with a doctor before beginning any serious running program. With the basics in step, she shoots you into the fast lane with advanced training tips, injury maintenance and prevention advice, and racing suggestions (how to find, prepare for, and run them), from local 5Ks on flat courses to demanding international-scale marathons.

In the For Dummies tradition, she ends with a series of top 10 lists. Two of them, taken together, nicely capture the essence of Flo-Jo as hard-nosed competitor and elegant personality: More Than Ten Ways to Sharpen Your Mental Edge and Ten Beautiful Races. For Flo-Jo, victory and aesthetics were just two legs of the same race. --Jeff Silverman

Florence Griffith Joyner : Track and Field Star
    by April Koral

    Florence Griffith Joyner

Koral covers various aspects of the American sprinter's life from birth until 1990, with greatest emphasis on the events leading up to her winning three gold medals in the 1988 Olympics. The presentation is well organized, to the point, and easy to read. This, and the fact that Joyner is an intriguing subject, combine to give the book wider appeal than most sports biographies. Joyner is a captivating character who simultaneously suggests fun, drive, hardship, and success on and off the track. (As an adolescent she was kicked out of a shopping mall when she refused to remove her pet boa constrictor from around her neck.) Even her athletic experiences have a quirky side, as when she was eliminated from the 1984 Olympic relay team by officials who judged her fingernails to be too long for safe baton-passing. From several sources, including Sports Illustrated and the Associated Press, the full-color photographs depict excitement, drama, glamour, and strength. Throughout, Koral evokes strong visual images that give the text a richness unusual in nonfiction written this simply and indirectly. Also, a few well-placed quotes from Joyner add texture. --Liza Bliss, formerly at Leominster Public Library, MA

    Carl Lewis
by Steve Klots  Nathan I. Huggins (Editor)  Coretta Scott King, (1995)

    Carl Lewis

Black-and-white photographs accompany a solid text that balances the excitement of Lewis's incredible track-and-field accomplishments with the press's criticism and Lewis's lessons in maturity. The focus remains on his youth, family, and career; not on his personal life.

Stronger Abs & Back by Brittenham & Brittenham.

The above book is now available from the Oztrack Athletic bookstore.
The program recommends a large variety of trunk exercises performed perfectly. Athletes should aim in their programs for a good mix of core stability exercises possibly with a swiss ball and to progress from Ab/back conditioning exercises to strength exercises (as their condition improves) and then possibly for some athletes to Ab/back power exercises.  The days of considering 3 sets of 50 situps as good ab work are gone.
I consider this a key area in helping an athlete to prevent trunk related injuries eg Hamstring tears. a stable trunk should also provide better balance and relaxation at high speeds.
